Monitor
- In its vision for 'a planned and systematic approach to values education' the National Framework for Values Education in Australian Schools identifies school activity in 'reviewing the outcomes of their values education practices' as an important part of the process'. In effective values education, it says, schools 'regularly review the approaches used to check that they are meeting the intended outcomes'. Further, it suggests that the regular reviewing 'against identified outcomes is built into the school planning process' and that schools involve the school community in 'monitoring of values education programs'. Clearly monitoring the impacts and outcomes of values education is a major component of a values-centred school culture.
- The Values Education Good Practice Schools Project – Stage 2 identifies the gathering and monitoring of data 'for continuous improvement in values education' as one of the ten principles of good practice. The schools' experiences of monitoring for outcomes illustrates the use of a range of monitoring techniques that yield both qualitative and quantitative data to assist in identifying impacts and outcomes and modifying approaches. See extract from VEGPSP Report – Stage 2, Gather and monitor data for continuous improvement in values education.
- Analysis of the qualitative and quantitative data from the 51 clusters involved in Stages 1 and 2 of the Values Education Good Practice Schools Project – both through the Final Reports and through the intensive work of the Australian Council of Deans of Education Values Partnership Project – has produced a strong case to support the conclusion that effective whole-school values education can be transformative for schools, teachers and improving schooling outcomes for students.
- The University of Newcastle has undertaken additional qualitative and quantitative research designed to test propositions about the efficacy of values education. The research reviews and reports on how the explicit teaching of values impacted on a number of areas in school education. It provides empirical evidence that values education had a positive impact on developing student–teacher relationships and improving school and classroom ambience, which led to more settled and productive classrooms. The report also documents the positive impact that values education can have on student and teacher wellbeing. See Project to Test and Measure the Impact of Values Education.
